Swine Flu Background Information

What are the Symptoms:
Some of the symptoms are a sudden onset of fever, cough or shortness of breath.  Other symptoms can include headache, sore throat, tiredness, aching muscles, chills, sneezing, runny nose or loss of appetite.

NHS Health protection advice - general hygiene can help to reduce transmission of all viruses, including the swine flu virus. This includes:

  1. Covering your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, using a tissue when possible
  2. Disposing of dirty tissues promptly and carefully
  3. Maintaining good basic hygiene, for example washing hands frequently with soap and water to reduce the spread of the virus from your hands to your face or to other people
  4. Cleaning hard surfaces (such as door handles) frequently using a normal cleaning product.

 

Protocols for Swine Flu:

  1. Staff members/volunteers to remain at home if they have suspected swine flu.
  2. Should a staff member or volunteer become infected with suspected swine flu please make the Chief Executive aware as soon as possible.
  3. All staff to be made aware of basic hygiene procedures to reduce risk of virus spreading
  4. All staff to be made aware that there is alcohol gel on reception should they come into contact with ill clients
  5. Appointments should be cancelled by the Administrator if a member of staff is infected with swine flu
  6. The staff team will endeavour to keep the organisation open for business.  However, should staff illness make this impossible, notices will be displayed on the building and the Chairman will be contacted to cascade the information. Closure will be time bound and a date of opening will be given.


Staff/Volunteer Protocols for Swine Flu:

  1. All members of staff and volunteer to remain at home if they have suspected swine flu.
  2. All staff to ring the Chief Executive or in the second instance, the Administrator if they have suspected swine flu
  3. The xxx    Manager will have delegated authority (should the CEO be ill) to close the organisation if service delivery is impossible due to staff/volunteer ill health. Signs to be displayed and clients to be contacted with closure list.
  4. All staff members to cancel appointments should they feel ill.
  5. All staff to be made aware if another member of staff or a volunteer has suspected swine flu.
  6. All  staff to positively promote excellent personal hygiene
